Third Grade
Language Arts and Reading
The third grade reading program is an integrated curriculum in which reading, writing, speaking, and viewing are seen as interrelated language processes. Stories are grouped according to specific themes and topics which are relevant and accessible to students of all cultures. Specific reading skills taught in the third grade include cause and effects, fact and opinion, the use of context clues to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words, and analysis of the author’s purpose and point of view.
Spelling
Spelling list words are phonetically grouped to reinforce similarities and aid recall. Skills emphasized are use of the dictionary, recognition of word patterns, proofreading, and journal writing.
Handwriting
Third grade students are taught to form cursive letters and are required to use this style of writing in their daily class work beginning in January.
English
This program includes grammar and related language skills such as the study of nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns. There is also work in proper sentence formation and punctuation. Creative writing such as friendly letters, thank-you notes, book reports, and survey/interviews give practical application to these skills.
Mathematics
Third grade students are taught to utilize problem-solving techniques and to see math as a practical and useful life skill. Skills taught include addition and subtraction of four-digit numbers, place value up to 100,000, time, money, basic multiplication facts through 12 × 12, measurement, rounding, and estimation.
Science
Topics include living things,oceans and fossils, habitats, and simple machines. The skills developed are reading illustrations, observing, comparing and contrasting, classifying, sequencing, recording data, and predicting.
Social Studies
The theme for grade three is Community. Topics covered include Pilgrims, Native Americans, Colonies, landforms, rural, suburban and urban areas, Erie history, and current events. Skills practiced are reading maps and globes, studying and researching topics, identifying and practicing good citizenship habits, and identifying past, present, and future events.
Religion
This program is based on scripture and is rooted in the teachings of the catechism of the Catholic Church. The theme for grade three is Church Community. Prayer is an integral element, as well as the personal and moral skills necessary for Christian living.
Other
Art, Computer, Gym/Swimming, Library, Music, and Health are weekly specials provided by trained personnel.
