The Physical Education program at Villa Maria Elementary is based on the concept: Fitness for Life.
While basic skills are still taught, the focus is on cardio-respiratory fitness.
Our Aquatics, is the only in-school swimming program in the area and begins with at age 4. The focal point for the youngest students is to acquaint them with the pool so they become comfortable in the water and knowledgeable about pool safety. The American Red Cross Swim progression levels begin with Kindergarten. Aquatic’s remains an integral part of the P.E. program; skills, safety, and fitness are taught at all levels.
Health and Wellness classes begin in Grade One. Health and Safety is the concentration in grades 1-4; with an emphasis on nutrition and cardiovascular health. Health and Wellness begins in Grade 5; also with an emphasis on cardiovascular health.
Physical Ed. classes offer a variety of activities to all grades. Students participate annually in 'Jump Rope for Heart' and 'Hoops for Heart'. These events in co-operation with the American Heart Association raise awareness of heart disease and stroke. VME has risen well over $151,600 in the past 17 years to help fight these diseases. VME has remained the top-earner in Erie County for the 16 years we have participated in these events.
Students of all ages are encouraged to participate in the Presidents Active Lifestyle Program each year. This national program is a great way to motivate people of all ages to be physically active on a regular basis.
